Originally, the Obama Administration claimed that 90% of guns used by criminals in Mexico were from the United States. More recently, they are now claiming that 70% of the guns were from the U.S. (1) However, this is 70% of the guns that "Mexican authorities asked the ATF to trace." (2) Guns that were obviously not American-made or imported into the U.S. were not traced.
